Multi-workday vehicle routing problem with ergonomic consideration of physical workload

Multi-workday vehicle routing problem (MWVRP) is concerned with planning daily delivery routes of vehicles over consecutive workdays. During the planning period, daily delivery routes can be the same or different. In this paper, we study two policies for assigning delivery workers to vehicles. Firstly, workers are preassigned to vehicles at the beginning of the considered period. In each workday, the same worker-vehicle pairings are followed. Secondly, workers are postassigned to vehicles based on the vehicles' carried loads. This policy usually results in different daily worker-vehicle pairings. These two policies are evaluated according to the total travel distance of the vehicles and the physical workloads imposed on the workers during the planning period. The result shows that the worker-vehicle post-assignment policy is superior to the other policy in both aspects.
