摘要

The purpose of the study was to determine associations between anthropometric variables of Costa Rican cyclists and symptoms related to erectile dysfunction and pudendal nerve and the ulnar nerve entrapment. Participants were 24 male cyclists participating in a local race in Costa Rica. Subjects belonged to the under 23, elite, and senior categories, and their mean age was 32 +/- 12 years. Measurements were obtained for body height, weight, hand strength, and a symptoms questionnaire of neuropathy of pudendal nerve and erectile dysfunction. Results indicated no reports of numbness in the 5(th) finger (Pinky); however, 43.5% reported numbness in that finger in previous races. Also, 9.1% reported numbness in the genital region, and 50% reported numbness in the genital region in previous races. No significant differences were shown either between the results of hand strength before and after the race (p > 0.05), or between the results of hand strength after competition and the weekly distance covered during training (p > 0.05). Neither was found a significant association between numbness in the genital region reported in previous or the actual competition and the weekly distance covered during training (p > 0.05). In conclusion, no significant associations between anthropometric variables and symptoms associated to erectile dysfunction was observed in Costa Rican cyclists. The figures in numbness in the genital area reported in previous races suggest that symptoms are likely to appear during longer distance and higher intensity competitions, as well as in a different terrain.
