Mathematical Formulation of Apparent Diffusivity in Polymer Solution Coating with Plasticizer

A trial was conducted to determine whether the diffusive flux of a ternary component coating could be estimated from the measured mutual diffusivities of binary component coatings. A ternary component coating comprising a blend of water, plasticizer and polymer was the focus of this study, and a mathematical formulation of the apparent diffusivity obtained from assuming the coating to be a pseudo-binary component one was examined with a generalized Maxwell-Stefan equation of the ternary component coating. The apparent diffusivity estimated by the formulated equation and measured mutual diffusivities of binary component coatings showed good agreement with the measured apparent diffusivity published in previous studies.
