摘要

This paper presents an automatically technique for synthesizing the visual effects of traditional Chinese watercolor painting using stroke-based approach (SBR). Our method simulates the process of drypainting approach, one kind of approach in watercolor painting technique, which manipulates the typical painting technique in watercolor painting. In this method, the original image is segmented into two parts with different level of frequencies, and then a painterly rendering is built up in a series of layers for each part. Every layer is generated using a mesh of short and arc curved brush strokes. The curvature of the brush stroke is totally controlled by the position of the starting point and the end point and aligned to normal of reference image gradients. Here brush stroke is an encapsulation of parameters, such as brush width, brush length, orientation, color and opacity. The arc shape stroke is proved to be more flexible and changeful than stroke with short rectangular shape, while also can save a lot of computation time than long, curved brush stroke. Meanwhile the synthesized method could not only preserve the whole contour effectively, but also provide enough space to express the obscure styles of Chinese watercolor painting.
