A New Cardiac Fiber Tracking Method Using Particle Filtering in MRI

Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) is known to be effective for getting information about the microstructure of human tissue. It is a reliable tool already used in clinics. Nowadays, most researches concerning water diffusion concentrate on the white matter fiber tracking in the brain. In fact, water diffusion within the cardiac muscle has not been fully investigated yet. In this paper, we propose a new fiber tracking method based on particle filtering devoted to the heart. Assuming some probability distribution between one voxel and its neighbours, it is possible to compute the posterior distribution of the particle set so providing the possible orientation of the fiber. In this article, some important issues about the seed selection and number of particles are discussed. Experiments on the fiber cup platform and real cardiac data have been undertaken. The results, based on common tensor data, show that particle filter technology proves to be advantageous and more robust to noise both on a synthetic dataset and on a real cardiac dataset.
