Analysis of Hertz elastic contact on coating exerted by a rigid sphere

摘要

ANSYS finite element package is applied to simulate the process of coating material exerted by a rigid sphere. The results of finite element method (FEM) arc compared with classical Hertz analytical Solutions to examine the accuracy and the feasibility of the established FEM model. The variations of contact stress and contact width with contact load, Linder different coating thickness and different Young';s modulus arc analyzed. The bond of coating/substrate is perfect. when the ratio of Young';s modulus of the coating/substrate is between 1 and 2.5. Too thin coating may result in the higher interfacial shear stress and consequently failure of the material. The coating thickness has little influence on the contact width. The research effort is helpful for further mechanical analysis of coating/substrate system and optimization design of coating material.
