Magnetic permeability of Si-rich (FeCoNi)-based nanocrystalline alloy: Thermal stability in a wide temperature range

Structure and magnetic properties of as-quenched and annealed Ni-5(Fe0.5Co0.5)(68.5)Si17.5Nb3B5Cu1 alloys were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and the temperature dependence of initial permeability (mu(i)-T curves) from room temperature up to 680 degrees C. The as-quenched sample exhibits a higher secondary crystallization temperature (T-x2) and a larger crystallized interval temperature (Delta T-x = T-x2-T-x1) for precipitating the single soft magnetic crystal phase. Annealing temperature (T-a) exerts a significant effect on room- and high-temperature mu(i) for samples heating-cooling cycled at 510-680 degrees C. When T-a is at 640 degrees C, an excellent high temperature magnetic softness was observed in a wider temperature range, and the mu(i) above 1000 at 10 KHz can keep up to 600 degrees C. The origin of this improved high-temperature magnetic softness was also analyzed.
