CH2=CHCONH2 (I) and CH2=CHCOOH (II) in aq. solns. were grafted on starch (0.3:1 mass ratio) in a twin screw extruder at temperature profile 60-115 degrees C by using the (=NCMe2C(=NH) NH2)(2). HCl initiator. The starch-g-poly(actylamide-co-acrylic acid) copolymers produced were used as sorbents for removing Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions from their aq. solns. The sorption of Fe3+ ions increased with increasing the I:II ratio (up to 3:0) in the monomer mixt. used. The max. sorption of Cu2+ ions was achieved when the I:II ratio was 1:2. The partial neutralization of carboxylic groups in the copolymer resulted in increasing the sorption rate.
