A study of optimal actuator placement for control of diffusion

The performance of a controlled distributed parameter system is known to be dependent on the location of the control actuator, in addition to the controller itself. Thus actuator placement should be part of controller design for these systems. In this paper, several different criteria are compared in the context of controlling diffusion on a two-dimensional region. If the objective is to reduce the response to an initial condition, a linear-quadratic criterion is appropriate. The effect of different weights in a linear-quadratic cost function on the optimal actuator location is examined. If the issue is reducing response to a particular disturbance, an H-2 criterion is appropriate. The effect of different weights in this context is also examined. The simulations are performed with constant diffusivity and also with several different variable diffusivities. It appears that the optimal location is strongly dependent on diffusivity - optimal locations tend to be in locations of low diffusivity.
