摘要
We present a method of increasing the birefringence of liquid crystals (LC) by doping them with anisotropic gold nanorods. The nanorods were assumed to align in the same direction as the LC molecules. We calculated the effective refractive index of nanorod-doped LCs from their transmission and reflection coefficients. At 3000 nm, the effective ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices were n(o) = 1.55 and n(e) = 1.86, respectively, resulting in an approximately 50% increase in birefringence from that in the nondoped case of 0.2.
