A new method to measure wear cracks by using reflected light intensity is introduced in the present paper. Then, an apparatus is developed. During the measurement, the angle of the incidental light is changed continuously. The rake angle of each point on the measured surface is calculated by the angle of the incidental light at the moment when the maximum reflected light intensity reaches. Then, the relative height of each point can be obtained with the rake angle and point separation distance. A comparison between the results obtained by the present apparatus and a profiler shows that the present method is feasible and effective. The apparatus has also been used to measure an impact crack on a soft surface, which cannot be measured by the profiler.
