A study was conducted to demonstrate 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC)-assisted esterification of a polyoxometalate (POM)-functionalized phenol with carboxylic acids. The study demonstrated that the esterification and synthesis reaction provides a pathway to make hybrid materials, which contain covalently bonded POM clusters and organic conjugated segments. It was observed that compound [(Bu4N)2]-1 was synthesized according established modified procedures. It was found that with use of DCC, it was difficult to perform esterification of compound [(Bu4N) 2]-1, which takes place after refluxing for a prolonged time. DCC was essential for performing esterification and synthesis reactions, as it served as a dehydration agent.
