摘要

Objectives: To estimate the consequences of asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy in a city of Bangladesh.
Study design: A longitudinal cohort study.
Methods: A total of 162 asymptomatic bacteriuric pregnant cohorts with their controls were selected for the follow up. The controls were selected with the individual matching of the cases. Both the groups were followed up by monthly interval up to delivery. The data of the match paired pregnant mothers were analyzed to find out the risk of developing symptomatic bacteriuria, hypertensive disorder in pregnancy (HDP), pre-term delivery and low birth weight due to asymptomatic bacteriuria.
Results: Asymptomatic bacteriuria is a risk factor for maternal and fetal morbidity including development of symptomatic bacteriuria (RR = 2.25; 95% CI 1.01-5.01), HDP (RR = 2.66; 95% CI 1.43-4.49), premature labor (RR = 2.2; 95% CI 1.08-4.45) and low birth weight (RR = 1.84; 95% CI 1.22-2.78).
Conclusions: All pregnant women should be screened for asymptomatic bacteriuria during antenatal care as routine checkup, and if positive then it should be treated to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes.
