On the basis of the fundamental concept of expansion in mathematical morphology, the idea and algorithm of directed growth with structure elements of elastic scale have been put forward. The scale of the structure element is equal to zero or less then the threshold value in one expansion, which depends on the Euclidean distance between the adjacent points and whether the area for expansion is on the boundary or not. With multiple applications of the directed growth algorithm with elastic scale, the diffused and spiral typhoon cloud bands, which were variable in form, were successfully segmented.
