摘要

The complete nucleotide sequence of the Bg transposable element of maize has been determined. The element, present at the Waxy (Wx) locus of the mutable allele wx-m32, has a length of 4,869 base-pairs (bp), carries terminal inverted repeats of 5-bp, and generates an 8-bp direct duplication of the flanking target DNA upon insertion. The inverted repeats of the element start with the nucleotides CA, like the repeats found in other transposable elements. At 813 bp from the 5' end of element an ATG start codon is present, which is included in the sequence CACATGG, in good agreement with the Kozak rules for the initiation of translation. The ATG codon is followed by a 735 bp long open reading frame and ends with a TAA stop codon, which together with its surrounding sequence corresponds with a intron splice-junction site. The rest of the Bg element contains four other potential coding regions, interrupted by putative intron sequences.
