An o-minimal characterization of special subvarieties

Let S = Gamma\X+ be a connected component of a Shimura variety and let pi:X+ ->. S be the uniformizing map. We show that an algebraic subvariety V of S is weakly special if and only if an irreducible analytic component of pi V-1 is definable in an o-minimal structure over R.
