摘要

Here we celebrate the life of the eminent botanist, Stefan Vogel, by outlining the influence of his pioneering work on floral scent, published in his 1963 book, "Duftdrusen im Dienste der Bestaubung". This book, written before the advent of capillary GC-MS, explored scent production in diverse flowering plants through histological staining of complex floral "scent glands". The expenditure of stored starch granules provided a metabolic cost for scent production, suggesting that scent is not a trivial by-product. Vogel also anticipated the importance of floral heat production (thermogenesis) in pollination, both in terms of its direct energetic effects on pollinators and its physiological impact on scent biosynthesis and emission.
