摘要
Tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon and represent 2% to 4% of head and neck neoplasms. Eighty percent of parotid tumors are benign, of which 80% are pleomorphic adenomas, and 80% arise from the superficial lobe of the parotid.(1)
Angiomyolipomas (AML) are benign mesenchymal tumors, commonly found in kidneys, but rare in the head and neck.(2) They can occur in association with a tuberous sclerosis (TS) complex or appear as an isolated disorder. The hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections contain 3 typical histological components: adipocytes, smooth muscle cells, and vascular structures.
Until now, only 25 cases of head and neck angiomyolipomas have been reported in the literature, and only 3 of them in the parotid gland.
We present a case of a parotid AML and review the features of these tumors arising in the head and neck.
