摘要

In the present article, we study moderately wide beams with attached piezoelectric patch actuators in detail. In contrast to beams with a width that is small compared to their length, the effect of the lateral strains and of the imposed lateral eigenstrains due to the piezoelectric actuators is no longer negligible, in case the width is comparably large. In such cases, beam theory is not sufficient, but plate theory must be used in order to accurately model the behavior of the structure. In the present article, we introduce a low order finite-dimensional model for such problems, which is sufficiently accurate; hence, it can serve as a basis for the proper design of adaptive and controlled moderately wide beams. As an example, we study a frame structure with thin moderately wide sidewalls that we describe by means of the developed low order finite-dimensional model. A comparison to three-dimensional Finite-Element computations verifies the accuracy of our model.
