This paper demonstrates dispersion-equalization techniques for substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) interconnects using tapered SIW terminations. Two system arrangements are introduced. It is shown that a properly designed tapered SIW section operating as a reflective equalizer along with a 3-dB coupler or a circulator can be used to equalize the dispersion that occurs in an SIW interconnect. Time-delay characteristics of the SIW interconnect and the designed tapered equalizer section are presented, and the two dispersion-equalization systems are evaluated in the time and frequency domains. Testing of the systems with a 1-Gb/s digital input demonstrates the efficacy of the dispersion-equalization techniques in the region directly above the cutoff frequency.
