摘要

Scientists produce a variety of outputs in research, teaching, knowledge transfer, and for the academic community. The evaluation of these diverse outputs has been the subject of a member survey organized by the German and Austrian agricultural economic societies GEWISOLA and OGA in 2016. The survey shows generally high work and life satisfaction (with the exception of post-docs and senior scientists with fixed-term contracts) despite a high number of working hours. The scientists' allocation of time to the different output areas as well as their own wishes seem to reflect a compromise between the expectations of the scientific community and of society. Thereby, knowledge transfer is perceived as enriching rather than as a burden. However, the evaluation of research outputs has been a cause for concerns. The respondents perceived the evaluation of research outputs by the scientific community as diverging from the expectations of society as well as from the wishes of the scientists themselves. Generally, members share many ethical positions. However, they disagree on a number of specific issues, such as the necessity of an ethics codex and the need for standards regarding the handling of authorship. Further concerns were raised with respect to biased incentives resulting in short-term orientation of research, the focus on visible results, as well as the undermining of intrinsic motivation.
