Determination of chloride and phosphate in heteropoly acid (HPA) samples with 3-(N-morpho-lino) propanesulfonic acid (MOPS), a zwitterions, as an ingredient of mobile phase by mobile phase ion chromatography was studied. Certain amounts of MOPS was added to adjust the pH of the eluent so as to restrain the decomposition of HPA, which is a strong-alkaline-unstable compound. The optimized ion pair reagents and inorganic additive were also added to obtain good peak shapes. The chloride and phosphate in HPA samples were accurately determined with eluent of pH 6.98.
