ANAEROBIC BIODEGRADABILITY OF WASTEWATERS OF A SOYBEAN OIL REFINING PLANT

Anaerobic digestion is utilized to reduce organic matter in wastewaters due to the low production of sludge. At the same time, it allows obtaining biogas as a source of renewable energy. This paper evaluates the anaerobic biodegradability of wastewaters from a edible oil refining plant, using the sediment from a contaminated river as inoculum. Specific metanogenic activity of the inoculum is 0.091g DQO(CH4)/gSSVxday. The evaluated environmental parameters indicated that the wastewaters are alkaline (pH= 8-10.5) and they carry a content of organic matter between 1497.8 and 32 863.3mg.l(-1). Oil and fat concentration ranged from 157,4 and 1 2040mg.l(-1). In the biodegradability tests performed an organic matter removal of 95% of the COD was obtained in 35 days, reaching a maximal degradation velocity of 0,3g DQO(CH4)/day in the initial 15 days of the experiment.
