In this paper, the metal triflates were employed as Lewis acid catalysts for nitration of toluene with 1 equiv. of nitric acid. Zr(OTf)(4) and Sm(OTf)(3) were found to be the most effective ones among the catalysts investigated, and the conversions of toluene were 77.1% and 67.4% respectively. The conversion of 100% could be reached with 98% nitric acid, while the conversion became 95.4% when toluene was used as solvent. The conversion of toluene was achieved to 89.9% with the isomer distributing of o : m : p=44.6 : 5.7 : 49.7 when using Sm(OTf)(3) loading on silica gel.
