A New Shap Finding Method of Slack Cable Assembly

Conventional form finding methods are merely suitable for stable structures and inapplicable to slack cable assembly for its unstable geometry and singular structural stiffness. This paper concerns the problem of shape finding of cable assemblies which could be incomplete with missing or slack cables, and consist of cables with lengths greater than their eventual assembled lengths. Based on the equilibrium equations, a new shape-finding method of slack cable system with given unstrained elements lengths was developed. Starting from analysis of properties of a single cable, the basic governing equation that reflects the relationship between the nodal coordinates and the nodal forces was deduced directly without establishment of stiffness matrix. The catenary element for cable was applied in this method to exactly consider the effects of sag. Some other discussions are also provided to benefit the understanding to this shape finding method. At last, an orthogonal cable net was illustrated to verify the accuracy and validity of the method respectively with the computer program developed by MATLAB.
